One thing that Sarah noticed when she looked at her bank statement last month was an unexplainable deposit of $2,000. Initially, she thought it must be a mistake, but on second reading, her ex-husband, Mark, was the sender.
These are the times that they hadn't spoken for more than two years since their divorce, which was tough and emotional. They were not getting along in marriage and had many financial problems and issues. It was difficult for Sarah to start living on her own after the separation, and she felt that she was left with a lot of the responsibility.
It wasn't long before that Mark contacted me. The payment was a mistake and he requested her to go back right away and return the money, he said. It was just a simple mistake that he needed to correct. However, it was not as easy for Sarah.
She came to realize that there was a balance that she was seeing in her bank account and she realized what she had experienced in her marriage and after the marriage. It was all coming back to me now, the financial strain, the sacrifices and the way that things had turned out. But part of her was guilty, she knew the money was not her money. However, another part of her would not be able to deny that, in some way, this money compensated for at least some of what she had lost.
The days passed and Mark would text her more and more. It was obvious he was frustrated, and it made Sarah start to feel uncomfortable. She was aware that she had a decision to make, which wasn't simple. Did this just come back to her, or was it about getting a sense of fairness she had been missing after years of feeling cheated?
Take that back and forth thinking out of Sarah's mind and she decided not to return the money for now. To her, it was sort of a reward if it was accidental.
Her decision was no quiet one, however. She told friends and family her situation and there was a split in the camp. She explained the situation to friends and family and there was a divide. Some thought she was entitled to that, on the basis of her problems. Others expressed the opinion that it was not a right action to keep the money because it was a mistake.
At the conclusion, Sarah had not only the money left in her hands, but she was left with a question that she never thought she would ask: Where does the line of fairness and responsibility lie, particularly with someone from her past?
